SPECIES THAT INFLUENCE SPOTTING
The four most prominent species used in producing spotted cattleyas are:
- C. guttata
- C. aclandia
- C. amethystoglossa
- C. Leopoldii
Have you noticed that all the flowers are of a waxy type, on strong inflorescences with multiple flowers? They are not exhibition type flowers (well filled in). The flowers all have that characteristic labellum, spade or semi-spade shape. The labellum comes out fairly well forward and its size balances the other segments of the flower. (It does not hang down like exhibition flowers do). The spotting can be small or bold, heavily clustered together or well spread and usually purplish in colour. The spotting can be on the petals only or on both the petals and sepals. Base colour of the petals and sepals can be from light green to cream to almost an orange. Flowers are long lasting. They can flower a couple of times a year and the plants vary in size from small to quite large. ( 15 to 400mm). The colour variation and ease of growing makes them a must in any collection.
